Hi Minnow, my name is Charles, many know me as wokka, but I answer as
both. I'm the list administrator, I own the domain and all of the
equipment that runs this list, as well as a few other sites.
Everyone here won't get along, we have right now, 399 subscribers.
Even with a common
interest such as caving, you won't find that many people that will get
along 100% of the time. But that's ok, it's part of our charm.
Since I've taken over the mailing list, back in 2006, we've added over
100 members and its been steadily growing.
One thing to note, some people follow this rule, others do not, be
polite, concise and use proper grammar. These are good points for
anyone, and any public forum, online or not.
One thing I'll ask as a favor, several of your replies did not include
quoting of who you replied to, this makes it very confusing for us
that didn't see the previous email, or a thread such as this one that
has 30 replies. So, please, when you reply, leave the pertinent parts
in the reply from the previous email, so we understand. If the email
was sent just to you, don't reply to the list with the answer :)

have cops shoot at him/his vehicle? they dont just practice their
marksmanship shooting live targets. Stay out and away from Juarez, even us

Thanks Don for the comment on the bullet holes.
We were in Bustamante a few years ago during one of the Labor Day work trips.
Seems there were some issues in town with a shooting occurring the day before.
The Federales had road blocks up on the road in and out of town. As we were
leaving on Monday, we drove through one of the road blocks where one of the
Federales noted that I had two bullet holes in the tail gate of the Tahoe
(before Jim K. owned it). Seems that some of my Boy Scout Venture Crew guys
thought it was funny to place a couple of those bullet hole stickers on the
car. Anyway, the Federales gave it a close look with the 17 year old with the
M16 pointed at the car. I got out and removed the stickers.
I think Don A. (hole) was in the car right behind me laughing his a$$ off
watching me sweat and shake. I thought for sure that I was going to spend some
time trying to explain things with my very limited Spanish.

You just finished reading the NSS News about cave exploring, also
known as "Flashlight Caving" and "Spelunking" by everyone but cavers.
After putting down the 'zine, you get this crazy idea to join a local
grotto and to explore some of the local caves in the area. This would
be your first awesome thing. An awesome thing that you will always
remember. The second awesome thing is that you read On Rope, which is
in part, about caving safety. You rock.
You join a beginner trip and almost get stuck in the birth canal of
Whirlpool, only to be coaxed out by your enthusiastic trip leaders.
You hear a rumbling sound from deep within, and as you exit up the
ladder, realize it's time for a beer. A Shiner, to be exact. You had
better ascend as quickly as possible to avoid the devastating force of
the rumbling stomach!
Oh yeah: and somewhere along the way, after returning home, you
realized you'd send in a comment to a silly spelunking iphone app, if
only you didn't have the BUY the &@*!&# thing to leave a comment!

i am Gary, the Vice-Chair of the UT Grotto in Austin. www.utgrotto.org
We have meetings on the 1st, 3rd, (and 5th) Wednesdays of each month on the
University of Texas Campus.

Wednesday meetings are more events than meetings where we get together both
beforehand as well as afterward to socialize and talk caves and caving.
Our group is quite active from the raw beginner to hard core international
expedition cavers with all ranges and calibers between. We have beginner
caving trips most Fridays along with other activities such as single rope
technique as an advanced technique for accessing caves. Surf around the
website and the calendar to see the monthly trips to Colorado Bend State Park
as well as the rest.
I realize that Lampasas is 90 miles away. None the less, you are cordially
invited to attend a meeting in Austin should you be willing and able just to
see what we are all about.

I have had the privilege to attend meetings of 5 different grottoes in
Texas, and 3 of which were
in the last few months.
There seems to be subtle differences in the grottoes' meetings, that
in some ways is sort of
like culture differences between different ethnic groups.
One grotto has a auditorium like environment with a speaker addressing
the audience from
a podium.
Another grotto has a Knights of the Round Table setting.
Another has a leader standing in front of the audience, like one job
seminar presentation.
Another is like a class-room with a teacher and a dry-erase board.
One grotto has organized agenda that they ritually go thru.
Another has an atmosphere
like a British Parliament session.
One has mostly 20 year olds. Another has lots of 50 plus year olds.
Another has a mixture,
but mostly 40 year olds.
One grotto usually gets someone who has never been caving at each
meeting. Another gets people who went caving in other areas before
moving to their town.
One grotto seems to have 20 chiefs and no indians. Another has all
indians and no chiefs.
One grotto strictly talks about caves, and another at least before the
meeting has
open controversial discussions.
One grotto eats while everyone is giving their presentation.
Another eats before the meeting at
a random location. Another meets off-site before to eat and meets
again off-site to drink beer after.
Some grottoes have had the same format for decades. Others change
the format with each new
president.
One meets in a room that looks like a beer-drinker's man cave.
One meets in a rock-climbing gym. And another in a chemistry building.
One grotto shows slides from a Hawaii trip, and another shows trips to
a cave back in the 60's that
was bull-dozed closed.
One grotto displays a fancy digital calendar projected from a laptop.
One grotto appears to dress more formally.
One grotto seems to have a larger number of Mexican cavers, while the
other grottoes are from
towns with a larger Mexican population.
Another grotto seems to have more cavers who somehow make money caving, or
at least have jobs that allow them to cave as often as they want.
But these are all subtle differences.
The things they have in common are amazing.
They all seem to say "ooh..." the same way when someone shows a
picture of a wall full
of fishtail speleothems. And the way they talk about the 10 feet of
cave they found like
the way members of the Alcohol Annoymous meeting talk about they have been
sober for 10 days. Or the sympathy the give each other, when their
caving plans fall
apart because of some unexpected situation. And how they
sarcastically poke fun at
one another as they explain why it took so long for them to climb up a
60 foot pit.
It is fun to attend other grotto meetings, and lets you see things
from a slightly different
perspective.
