Just received the sad news that Robert Mitchell, PhD., died this evening in San Antonio after a long illness.

For those of you who didn't know him, here is an excerpt from a message Bill Elliott sent last November:

Robert W. Mitchell, famous cave biologist and nature photographer, had a big career in cave biology at Texas Tech University, with students including James Reddell, Bill Elliott, Suzanne Wiley, Craig Rudolph, Glenn ("Limestone Cowboy") Campbell, J. Mark Rowland and many others. He published many important papers, but his macrophotography work with his wife Linda brought even more fame.

It is with much sadness I write this email to let you know our dear Mr.
Robert passed away this evening, March 18th. Linda and his caregiver Daniel
were right by his side, along with their two dogs and Ladybird, Robert's
bird. His last moments were very peaceful, even though it has been a long
and difficult journey. I will get back with you tomorrow with details on his
life celebration which will probably be next Saturday, March 27th. Please
pass this email on to anyone you feel should know this news.
Gena Johnson
(Linda's little sister.)
