Hi all,
As many of you know, we are in the process of replacing the fungus
infested shoring in the dig shaft in Don Sawyer Hall of Fort Stanton
Cave with a permanent stainless steel and HDPE bracing structure. At
the last FSCSP expedition, we began the process by pouring the
foundation. The cavers of the SWR did an outstanding job of helping
us during that expedition, and we were able to move almost 200 ten
pound bags of cement back to Don Sawyer Hall in only one day! Thanks
to all who came!
We are in need of assistance again. On the last weekend of this
month (October 31 - November 1) we are going to install the first few
levels of the replacement structure in the cave. As this message
goes out, Jim Cox is working overtime to get the framework for these
levels built. We will need help getting these frames and HDPE panels
back to Don Sawyer Hall, along with other tasks during the
installation itself. We need a minimum of ten cavers to get this
work done. The stainless steel frames (the heaviest things to be
taken back) weigh a little over 38 pounds. The more people we have,
the easier it will be to get the frames and other stuff into the
cave, as people can trade off so they won't be carrying the heavy
stuff all the time.
If you can help out that weekend, please let me know! As always,
your help will be appreciated! As is the case during the Fort
Stanton Cave Study Project expeditions, we will have the use of the
BLM bunkhouse near Fort Stanton, and that will be the meeting place
Friday evening or Saturday morning. We'll try to gather there at
about 8:30 am Saturday morning, have a briefing, then head into the
cave. Hope to see many of you there!
