I don't know about Chinese compasses being oriented to the south, but I do remember reading once how some of the compasses Lewis and Clark had were mistakenly oriented to the south. They carried the best compasses of the day, made by an Alfonso Tate, but somehow a couple of them had the wrong end of the needle dipped in paint, which made them read as if south was north. That's how the saying came about, "He who has a Tate's is lost."
