Who knows what the general public thinks, but the uninitiated often refer to the distance one goes into a cave as "depth" even if it is completely horizontal. In this case, however, they said 1600 feet below the earth's surface. That could be correct, and doesn't necessarily mean the cave is anywhere near that deep (which it is not). All it could mean is that there is a lot of overburden.
