Hey, DJ, good to hear you...

OK, well, vertical caving is a very specialized activity. Interested
persons should _only_ learn from instructors with deep and thorough
knowledge and lots of experience. The opinions expressed in this forum
are not meant to replace adequate instruction in controlled settings,
and are not meant to fully explore the intricacies of technical exploits
like vertical caving. Anyone trying to learn or engage in vertical
caving without proper instruction is risking injury or death. _Now_ that
we have the legalese out of the way...
They can be. I would not take an eight plate specifically to do the one
nuisance drop between several bigger drops.
:) Of course! Why carry an extra piece of gear when you already have
another descender with you, ideally one that can easily tackle more
complex descents? I meant it like for a cave that is mostly horizontal
and there is only one or two small (like 10 ft) drops, too hard to
downclimb easily/safely, too short to really need full vertical gear, so
you just rig a short rope, straight down, and perhaps use a seat harness
made out of webbing and down you go, onwards to the new virgin
passageways that are ahead.
Take care,
- Fofo
