Hanging wit Bats: Ecobats, Vampires, and Movie Stars
by Karen Taschek
UNM Press, 2008
96 pages hardcover, $16.95

As a bat reference, this book is packed with information-from the 20 oz
bumblebee bat and the flying fox bat with a six-foot wingspan, to vampire bats
that sip two teaspoons of blood from unsuspecting, sleeping victims at night.

There are more than 1100 species of bats worldwide and the author dispels many
myths surrounding bats. She delves into the evolution of bats, their daily
lives and how they've become portrayed in movies. She also explains the
expression "bats in your belfry". With bat habitats becoming more endangered,
the final chapter tells how to build a bat house.

Marketed for children 8 years and up, the book is rich with photos kids will
love. But as a read-alone book for science projects, it may not work. The
adults that help, though, will certainly be treated to some fun tidbits of
information.
