Underground Texas Grotto Meeting – Wednesday April 15, 2009
www.utgrotto.org

The Underground Texas Grotto meeting is on Wednesday from 7:45 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.
on the University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall
http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html

The Program for the evening is:
The Role of Caves in Recharging the Barton Springs Segment of the Edwards
Aquifer, which will evolve around the Aquifer and Recharge Enhancement.

Dr. Brian Smith from the Barton Springs - Edwards Aquifer Conservation District
will set the background about the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer
along with surrounding geology, Aquifer hydraulics, and how the crevices and
caves in the creek bottoms recharge the Aquifer. Then, Charlie Savvas will
share the specific recharge enhancement work that he and his crew performed as
part of the Antioche Cave Recharge Enhancement Project.

Come out to share in the fun, learn more about our precious resource, see some
of the really cool things that UT Grotto Cavers are doing, and pay your $10
Annual Dues. As always, the after meeting is at the Posse East for Beer &
Burgers. www.posseeast.com

The UT Grotto wants YOU to share your photos, stories, or research project with
the Cavers in Austin Texas. Contact Gary if you are willing and able.

To artistic cavers one and all,

Like Rob and Mark have said-we want your entries! I, Ellie Thoene, am
looking forward to seeing Texas cavers’ photos and maps. I know that there
are some talented people out there because I have seen your stuff.
Share your skills and talents with the TSA community!

Please refer to the following 2009 TSA Spring Convention site for more
detailed submission requirements-
http://www.cavetexas.org/events/TSASC/tsasc2009.html

If you are a Texas caver and have drafted a map within the last year, even
if the cave is not in Texas, please consider submitting your map. The three
map categories, depending upon submissions, include: Caves under 100 m,
Caves over 100 m, and First-time Cartographer. This is a good chance for new
cavers on non-mappers to see what the pros do and for first-time
cartographers to show off their newfound passions of mapping.

The four photo categories are: Print digital or photographic print, Digital
submitted as a digital file for display on-screen and projection, Black and
white either print or digital, and Slide. There are a lot of people out
there taking pictures in caves, and we hope to see an increase in entries
for this year's photo salon. We've tried to make the rules as simple and
easy as possible. Don't be afraid to enter. Almost everybody has at least
one really good shot. Please take the time to let us see yours!

Please note that all maps and photos need to be into Ellie Thoene at the
Salon booth by 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 25th. If you do not plan on being
at the TSA convention, or cannot make it by 10am on Saturday, please
email a digital copy of your map or photos (with credits, and captions) to
[email protected] or mail your hard copy to:

Subject: [MAR-NSS] CBS News raw footage of WNS cave available

CBS News graciously released the raw footage from the February 2009
visit to Mt. Aeolus Cave, VT, including footage "too gruesome for
television." I edited the footage into a mini documentary of sorts. In
some places the dead bats on the floor are estimated at 300 per square
foot. Viewer discretion advised...this is not a warm and fuzzy bat
video for the kids. The camera was actually rolling as the group
stumbled up to the cave (knee deep snow!) for Scott and Al's initial
reaction, none of this was staged. The full version is the "Aeolus in
February 2009" link on the web page. The video shows all the clips CBS
took in the cave.
http://www.batmanagement.com/wns/wns.html
When you click the movie link, the file will start downloading. It is
112 MB in size, runs 15 minutes, and will open with QuickTime or
iTunes or probably any other up to date media player.
I enhanced the in-cave footage as much as I could with software I
have. With all indications that WNS is about to steamroll thru the
mid-atlantic states next winter, I hope to make a "last chance" effort
this fall to capture some large bat swarms on HD video at mines near
Pittsburgh and at Hellhole/Schoolhouse before they are gone or at
least impacted. If anyone would like camera and lighting setup info
details that created the BCM Shindle Iron Mine video (also on the
webpage below Aeolus) just email me privately. Even further, I would
be happy to overnight a camera and light to someone who wants it to
document a WNS site and would be happy to edit the footage into
something usable for educational/press/presentation/archive/state
museum use. Time is ticking folks.
Thanks,

John Chenger

To those of you who have joined the Digital Revolution and joined the Members
Area of the TSA, I'm requesting that you go to

http://www.cavetexas.org/members/

log in, and check/update your profile as to how you want your TEXAS CAVER.

You'll see the following in your profile:

How I wish to receive the Texas Caver?:

Please select either "Online" or "Mail"

The next issue will be coming out next month and any trees we can save or $$
not given to the Postal Service helps.

Printing The TEXAS CAVER consumes the lion's share of the TSA budget and any
monies saved is a plus for the TSA.

If for some reason you haven't joined the Digital Revolution, we suggest you
visit the TSA website at www.cavetexas.org <http://www.cavetexas.org> and
become a paid member and/or become an online member of the TSA.

If you opt to receive the TC in the mail, you'll still be able to view back
issues online, or you can do your part to be environmentally and fiscally
responsible, while sticking it to the USPS and their rate increase in May by
opting to go digital!

Thanks!

Mark

Hi cavers,

We need burlap sacks (like the ones that larger amounts of coffee, produce, etc. sometimes come in) for our stabilization project in Blowing Sink. Please let me know if you have any that you'd be willing to donate... :-)

Thanks,
David

Attention all Texas cavers!

There are a couple of caving events coming up that I wanted to make you aware
of:

Salado, TX Ranch Ridge Walkathon, Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 -

Paul Unger has been contacted and all Texas cavers have been invited to
explore, map, and survey some caves near Salado, TX. We also will be doing some
ridge walking, exploring other possible caves, enjoying a nice camping area
(!), utilizing their swim hole (!!), and enjoying some excellent camaraderie
and weather!

Contact Mark for info and details. Salado is halfway between Georgetown and
Temple, an easy drive from Austin and DFW.

Please bring your own water, food, camping gear and vertical and survey gear,
if you have it.

Longhorn Caverns State Park Dig, Saturday, June 6th -

This is a pre-ICS project! We will be meeting at the visitors center at
Longhorn Caverns State Park at 9 AM, Saturday, June 7th, and caravan from there
to the Crownover entrance. We will be prepping the area for a possible thru
trip during ICS, hanging out at the beautiful state park, and conducting a
possible thru trip. Please bring your own water, food, and camping gear as the
Visitors area at the park is available Friday and Saturday nights.

Contact Mark, if you plan on attending!

So, after you have enjoyed talking about caving at the TSA Convention, come on
out to these projects, as well as the always popular CBSP Project, and get down
and dirty in some real caves.

If you're in college, you can always cram for those exams Sunday night, after
you get back!

Hope to see you and give me a holler if you're coming!

Thanks and I'll see you at the Convention in only 8 days!

Mark

So, bring the kiddos out to enjoy this beautiful park and other kids and, as
long as they don't eat too much of Stefan's and his Crew's delicious barbeque,
they can attend for free.

Consider this your very own stimulus package and cave related bailout,
compliments of the TSA!

Thanks,

Mark, Rob, Darla, and Denise (The TSA Board)
