Cavers,
There will be a board meeting of the Texas Speleological Survey this Saturday,
May 2, beginning at 10:30 am. We will be going all day so it will be a good
time for you to come by the office and take a look at the Texas files. You need
not attend the Directors Meeting (unless you want) but can share lunch when we
send out. I know several of you have complained that the Wednesday work
sessions do not work for you so this is a good opportunity to see maps and
files on the week-end. Let me know if you want to attend and I will put you on
the gate list. And write if you need directions.

Don't forget, if you're registered for the TSA member area you can add your
own calendar events for trips like Longhorn. Just log in to the member area
and one of the options after login is "Add Calendar Events". It works
because that's the same function I use to put new stuff on the calendar.
You can also edit (change or cancel) events you put on the calendar.

D'oh!
You're correct, Lyndon.
The Longhorn Project is THIS weekend, Saturday, May 2nd.
June remains to be seen.
Mea culpa (must be that cold medicine I'm taking!)

Thanks to everyone who responded, but at this point it's getting excessive.

Salazar and Locke Restore Scientific Consultations under the Endangered
Species Act to Protect Species and their Habitats
April 28, 2009
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke and Secretary of the
Interior Ken Salazar today announced that the two departments are revoking
an eleventh-hour Bush administration rule that undermined Endangered Species
Act (ESA) protections. Their decision requires federal agencies to once
again consult with federal wildlife experts at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – the two
agencies that administer the ESA – before taking any action that may affect
threatened or endangered species.
“By rolling back this 11th hour regulation, we are ensuring that
threatened and endangered species continue to receive the full protection of
the law,
” Salazar said. “Because science must serve as the foundation for
decisions we make, federal agencies proposing to take actions that might affect
threatened and endangered species will once again have to consult with
biologists at the two departments.”
“For decades, the Endangered Species Act has protected threatened species
and their habitats,” said Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. “Our decision
affirms the Administration’s commitment to using sound science to promote
conservation and protect the environment.”
In March, President Obama directed the Secretaries to review the previous
Administration’s Section 7 regulation of the ESA – which governs
interagency consultation – and Congress, in the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations
Act,
specifically authorized the Secretaries to revoke the regulation.
Locke and Salazar said the two departments will conduct a joint review of
the 1986 consultation regulations to determine if any improvements should
be proposed.
The Endangered Species Act was signed into law in 1973 to protect
imperiled species from extinction, as well as conserve the ecosystems and
habitats
necessary for their survival.

There have been several items concerning White Nose Syndrome lately. The
NSS has a new informational brochure here:
<http://www.caves.org/WNS/WNS%20flier%20090428.pdf>. There is also a campaign
to try to convince Congress to fund WNS research. You can take action to get
support for this here:
Finally, I heard last night on ABS News that they will be having a special
report on WNS Thursday evening at 11 PM.

Folks,
I have a water level measuring instrument in Devils Sinkhole which I
need to remove on Saturday. I'm looking for one or two folks (toadies)
that are vertically competent to go along and help. This is a one day
trip scheduled for Saturday, May 2. Devils Sinkhole is located near
Rock Springs, Texas, approximately 2 hours west of San Antonio. I would
like to enter the cave in the early to mid morning. You must have your
own vertical gear, know how to use it. Be able to change from
rappelling to ascending and back to rappelling (be able to do a change
over) and not have a fear of heights (the drop is 145 feet). This
should not be your first or even second vertical cave. I'm looking for
more experienced folks - thank you. You must also follow
decontamination procedures in that all of your equipment must be clean
and decontaminated before you arrive on the property. You must also be
willing to sign a release to enter the cave.
If you are interested, please send me an email at
[email protected]
Thanks,
Geary M. Schindel

Hi folks,
I have a cabin reserved at Kerrville City Park, for the week of 18-26
July during the ICS.
It is on the Guadalupe River and it has AC and four beds.
I will be staying on campus, therefore the cabin is up for grabs for the
week.
The weekly rate is $385.00 plus I paid a deposit last year.
You could get it for the family or several folks go in together and stay
there.
First come, first gets it.
