Preston, Texas counts caves as caves, shelters as shelters and so on. If you check out: http://www.utexas.edu/tmm/sponsored_sites/tss/longdeep/index.html you'll see the statistics for Texas.
Also the Texas definition for a cave is: Cave: a naturally occurring, humanly enterable cavity in the earth, at least 5 m (15' 6") in length and/or depth, and where no dimension of entrance exceeds the length or depth of the cavity. Texas currently has 4,361 records in the database with that definition out of 9,578 records in the database. A cave is a cave is a cave. Different state define caves different ways. Some count shelters, overhangs, has to be longer than 40 ft. from the dripline, deeper than 40 ft., etc. Both TN and MO have in the neighborhood of 8000, I think. Of course KY has the most miles of surveyed cave by a long shot. I think TX counts springs, rock art sites, rat holes, big and small. KY counts everything that anyone reports as a cave.
