In my opinion, The Phoenix Lander should have discarded several weighted aluminum balls about 30 feet from landing, so that they would disperse and impact the ground within view of the camera.
This would have given them a good idea how deep the soil is and possibly kicked up some of the ice for the cameras to see. NASA needs to send an artic rodent such as a Lemming, see how long it survives in the wild. http://l.yimg.com/g/images/spaceball.gif The rodent could be tracked with one of those GPS chips. I would theorize that a human would not be able to survive as long as a lemming, or other artic rodent. Astronauts will need something to eat once setting up a human station. The artic rodent may be the best source of protein. Now that should weed out the wannabe astronaut candidates.
