The term "spelunker" has been used for years as sort of a metaphor
to describe being deeply involved in something or to dig deep into
something.

But there is a new meaning to the word.

There is a growing trend to use the word "spelunker" as a sexual term
to describe a person who participates in an illicit tryst.

Here is an example using the scandal of the former Governor Spitzer
and his hooker:

The article reads:

"Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis .... will finally be able to
release video footage of the Eliot Spitzer spelunker Ashley Dupré at
Spring Break. The provocative footage of the former Gov.'s call
girl ...."

Here is further proof of this trend, the Urban Dictionary:

           http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=spelunker

And here is an even more disturbing example:

    http://www.georgeclark.com/spel/spel1.html

And another web-site proclaimed:

"all that guy has to do is bring a friendly girl spelunker down there
with him, and we could have the complete sexual geography of New York.
"

Another new use of the term spelunker,

is to describe the type of
french kiss that a person is prone to perform such as: "the lizard,
the washing machine, the cannibal, and the spelunker." Which I
can only presume means a person that
prefers to go deep with the tongue.

The term spelunker has been used in the gay community or by people
referring to the act of sodomy, as in "a&# spelunker."

I have no idea how long this word evolution has been going on, or how
it started.

Word evolution is a strange phenomenon.

On a semi-related note,

I searched several thesaurus' and could not find the word spelunker
or caver referring to one another. ( But that is probably old news
). However,
the participle "spelunking" and "caving" were found together. ( One site
claimed a spelunker studys caves and and a caver explorers caves for
sport ).

I guess the moral to the story, is that if you use the word spelunker
to describe
your caving activities, then you need to be careful how you phase it.
