It is with great pleasure that I announce that Dr. Arthur Palmer will be the Edwards Aquifer Authority's Distinguished Lecturer this spring. The lecture will be held on May 1, 2008 at the conference room at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas and will run from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM. The cost of the lecture is $20 and will include lunch and supporting materials. Reservations are required and there is a maximum attendance of 90 people. Deadline for Registration is April 18, 2008. The title of the lecture is Origin and Pattern of Solutional Porosity - The Importance of Karst Processes in the Hydrology of Soluble Rocks. The discussion will focus on: what is karst, types of rock, processes, landforms, and their origins, constraints on conduit development, competition and relative growth rates, patterns of solutional porosity and caves; management of karst aquifers, water supply and quality, interpretation of conditions in the Edwards Aquifer, and relation to other geosciences fields including engineering, petroleum, and ore geology. Dr. Palmer is Professor Emeritus of Hydrology and Geochemistry at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta and is the former director of the Water Resources Program at the school. He is author of about 100 publications on the subject of karst including the 2007 book Cave Geology. He also teaches a summer course on Karst Geology for Western Kentucky University at Mammoth Cave National Park.
