The web is quite about the new release of SP1 of Vista. So far, all the reviews I have found have been negative.
Some expressed frustration on the complicated download, and mentioned that even if you down-load it, you will have to un-install it in a few months after MicroSoft releases the final version of it. I really like the way Vista plays card games. I have been playing them on a 30 inch monitor at Fry's. But even on a $ 1,500 laptop, Vista sucks big-time. I think that once the $ 2,000 laptops cost half that; and Vista works the kinks out of SP1, then a Vista laptop will be worth considering. But by then, Mac's are likely to improve even more than they already have, and be so much better, that ordinary people are going to want to get a Mac laptop instead. If you had bought a 100 shares of Apple Stock in 1980 for $ 22 a share, your gain would be about $ 12,000 ( I think ). I don't know if it was ever cheaper than that, but I recall it was considered cheap in 1997.
