That Tata car in India doesn't come anywhere near meeting US safety
and emissions standards. It is designed to go 70 km/h (~45 mph),
although its top speed is higher. It costs $2500. US standards alone
_add_ $2500 to the cost of a car.
Someday there will be all-electric commuter cars. I think there's one
now you can get for $70,000 or thereabouts--range of 100 miles or so.
But that won't get you to very many caves and back, or work for any
vacation. If it is bought as an additional car just for commuting,
don't forget to charge against it the energy cost of making the car in
the first place. And, yes, with today's energy infrastructure, you are
substituting coal for oil. (Of course, it is _our_ coal, not some
