Howie's Harness at the NSS Convention is selling the Princeton Tec Torrent flashlight.
It is designed for scuba diving, so it is a little heavier than most plastic flashlights. However it is brighter than any other plastic LED flashlight that I have seen. This would be the light you would want if you plan to swim down in Jacob's Well, or sump dive in Carrazal or for snorkeling on the Comal, or Guadalupe, or maybe snorkeling in the entrance passage of Honeycreek. It has a longer burn time than most of my LED flashlights as it uses 8 AA batteries. Howie's is selling them for $ 50 for the convention. This might be a good back up light in some of the river caves down in Mexico like Acahuizotla. Is this light better for caving than the Princeton Tec Surge ?? I would say yes, because you never have to worry about the bulb burning out or breaking. On a related note, the brochure for this light has a chart comparing the lights performance on lithium batteries vs. alkalines. They claim that the lithium batteries do not burn as long, but that they provide a much longer bright light before becoming dim. Can that statement be generalized for all LED lights?? What would you rather have in the cave, longer bright light, or longer light with less brightness? Personally, I would rather have a light where I can choose the brightness to conserve battery life. I would like a minute long burst of super bright light, and the capability to dim it down to were I can read a book in my tent.
