Hey Cavers, Jerry was kind enough to send out the notice of our 6th Annual Cave Day event. 6 years and going strong. Last year over 1400 people attended this event, that's why we need YOU! As you all hopefully know by now, it's not a caver event but, a day to get the public out on the karst, to have fun and educate them about our wonderful Tx caves and to get them underground to experience a little of what makes Tx and in particular our aquifer so precious and special. The vast majority of attendees are from the surrounding neighborhoods and they are ALL on the Recharge Zone area of the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer, so educating these folks can certainly help to protect our caves and the aquifer water quality. These folks aren't interested in becoming cavers per se but, getting them knowledgeable about the karst has already paid off in terms of folks contacting us about potential caves, caves in danger from development or destruction from other means, and it keeps them thinking about how precious and sensitive our underground resources are, here in Tx.
WE NEED caver help for this event. We need folks to help clean up the preserve before Cave Day, and on that day to help gear up visitors, we need folks to help manage access to the 2 small caves on the preserve. We need folks there to answer questions, provide information, help w/other participants and their activities. In general we need a real caver presence to help spread the idea that we are the guardians of the karst and we're there to help them understand how they as citizens can do their part to preserve and protect this very unique special part of our Austin/Central Texas community. If you're interested, if you've never been before it's worth getting involved. You've never seen so many NON cavers come to embrace protecting this incredible resource. Clearly Austin and the San Antonio areas have the most educated non caver population, perhaps in the country, certainly in Texas!
