This story appeared in today's Houston Chronicle:

They fubared the story after re-inventing it from the source below, who
had re-written it from another source, who didn't reveal
their source.

However, I believe they re-wrote the story
from a July 3rd press release from the BCT:

http://www.bats.org.uk/news_events/babybats.asp

The story alledges that during the last week of June there
was "wetter weather" in Britain than normal. And that this
was "could" not be good for the newborn bats.

The Chronicle has been doing a lot of 2nd hand and 3rd hand
reporting lately. Yesterday they ran a story about the Brady
Bunch girls having a lesbian moment. Their source was the
National Enquirer.

You can not believe a single thing you read in the Houston Chronicle, or
probably any newspaper, for that matter. It is
all twisted and distorted to satisfy the editor and what he believes
his reading audience wants to hear.

Surprisingly, they didn't try to blame it on the melting polar ice caps,
or global warming or ozone, etc.

Did the bats really abandon their newborns? If so, was it solely because
of the rain, or could there be another culprit. Maybe a lot of cavers
were bothering the nurseries?

Based on the way I read the BCT version, there was not one confirmed death
of a newborn bat during the month of July or August or September.
