      I agree.  I have seen some amazingly used and abused gear go for good 
money at auctions, especially if there is a good story associated with it or if 
it was part of some particularly memorable trip.  For example, I recovered some 
totally trashed pieces of rope (sections of sheath missing, core frayed and 
knotted) that had been left rigged at the entrance of Infiernillo once when it 
flooded.  I sold several lengths of it at grotto auctions simply because people 
had never seen what could happen to rope in a serious flood.  It was good 
teaching material.  I believe some of the infamous 1980 Polish rope from San 
Agustín likewise sold at auction.
