Older flash technology isn't all its cracked up to be, it may be solid
state, but it was not that fast and could only be written and re written so
many times.  Good applications for flash drives were in devices like dumb
terminals, so for past technology, hard drives have always been superior on
many fronts.

I just read that Dell is making flash memory available as an alternative to
the hard drive in some of its laptops. 32GB for an extra ~$500. Back in the
days when a hard drive held 5MB, flash would have taken over by now. But of
course hard drives are getting bigger just as fast as flash memory is
