Just a bit of clarification for something Kunath said about NSS regions. He
wrote that the NSS region structure was ended in 1960. The NSS continues to
have "regions," of which the TSA continues to be one, although it seems like
a lot of people don't know that. Officially, regions are voluntary
associations of two or more grottos, but the TSA is not the only region that
really functions as an individual membership organization.
What happened in 1960 is that the NSS bylaws were completely rewritten to
create the present structure of the Board of Governors, consisting of
directors elected by the membership and officers the directors appoint.
Previously, the board contained, among others, a representative of each NSS
region. As the number of regions increased, the board became larger and more
unwieldy, with large numbers of absences from meetings, etc. So, yes,
whatever slight formal role the TSA directly had in running the NSS did
cease in 1960. The change is similar to the change years ago in the TSA from
being run by a board consisting of representative of each grotto (I
believe--I wasn't in Texas then) to its present structure. -- Bill Mixon
