Jacob's Well in Wimberley is a karst spring similar to Barton Springs or San Marcos Springs.

Wimberley Valley Watershed Association (WVWA) Board president Patrick Cox said future generations, like Gammon, will be able to experience the natural wonder thanks to their recent purchase.

"For the first time since the 19th century, Jacob's Well is now owned by a single entity; the Wimberley Valley Watershed Association," Cox said.

The nonprofit conservation organization purchased the property with a $2 million loan from a private conservation-minded lender. The WVWA's goal is to repay the loan and raise additional funds to manage and restore what they are now calling the Jacob's Well Natural Area.

Cox said the acquisition of 50 acres of land and water means long term protection for the natural spring and underwater cave.

Jacob's Well purchase

The Wimberley Valley Watershed Association bought Jacob's Well and its surrounding property.

"Our mission will be to protect this area as a natural region and protect the spring flow of this vital resource here in the Texas Hill Country," Cox said.

U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologist Marcus Gary said the acquisition will also help protect those who drink from the Edwards Aquifer. Gary said the well is a perfect place to study the water quality and quantity of the aquifer. The acquisition will allow Gary to broaden his research.

"Before there were issues with land owners. There were so many different people that owned these slices around Jacob's Well. Now we can look at things in a larger area and have direct access," Gary said.

More importantly, Gary is glad to hear new owners will make public awareness a priority.

"The more people become aware of it, the greater the need for information about it," Gary said.

To make a financial contribution to help manage and restore Jacob's Well Spring call Wimberley Valley Watershed Association at (512) 847-1582.
