I agree with those who believe that indiviual efforts are being unreasonably
discouraged.
I gave up a labor day trip because I live in Houston and wanted to help with
the evacuees here. I went to the 2 hour special training for food
distribution volunteers given by a mega church organizing the food relief
effort for the Red Cross. After the session, I was told to go home and wait
until my services were needed. Then, I went by the Red Cross headquarters
to volunteer and left a bunch of money. The volunteers that they were
looking for immediately were medical personnel so I put my name on another
list. So far I haven't been contacted by email or phone.
Overall, I feel disappointed that I've had this time off from work and have
been able to do so little.
Tomorrow, I have to go back to work as a speech therapist and I'm sure my
school will see some of these children. At my local church, we sorted
clothes to take to the shelters and filled ziplock bags with school
supplies. Evacuees will be moving into my apartment complex to fill
vacancies so maybe I'll be able to assist them in some way. Donna Mosesmann

First of all, I doubt that denying manpower based on organizational
alignment or lack of, is going to minimize chaos in this scenario.
