The debate I was responding to came before your post, and was about whether Texans should get in their cars and drive into the disaster areas on their own, with a general intention of helping. Some said this was practical, others argued that it is impractical. I said that there are already ways to help -- both people and animals -- without leaving our own areas, particularly in Texas where many people and animals have evacuated.

I strongly agree with you that as many pets as possible should be rescued, because we owe it to the pets and also for the mental health of their owners. Losing a beloved animal under those circumstances, and imagining it starving in a flooded building, must be agonzing. I have volunteered at my local Red Cross and also contacted people at the humane society, should they need additional help.

Many animals live in caves ...Some cavers are involved in animal rescue ... Many cavers have animals .... Most animals are better people than people!

They deserve to be rescued.

As you all know, there are a multitude of hurricane victims in Austin right now with no place to stay. Some of these people have their pets with them. The Red Cross and the City of Austin are setting up a temporary shelter at the Toney Berger Center but ARE NOT allowing pets inside. Patt Nordyke with the Texas Federation of Humane Societies has asked me to help her set up a shelter for animals outside of the Berger Center. I will be meeting her at the PetSmart on Brodie at 2 pm today to transport supplies over to the football stadium where we will be setting up a temporary pet shelter. Supplies and people power are badly needed. If you have extra pop ups, water dishes, dog beds or anything that might come in handy please drop them off ASAP. This could be an extended operation and volunteers will be needed to check pets in and care for them while they are here. Please think about what you can do to help and drop by the center to volunteer. Patt's mobile is 826-8605 and mine is 656-1049.

Thanks,

 David Lundstedt

The Pet Food Bank of Austin/Travis County will be assisting. If you want to drop-off your contributions at our drop barrels, they are at different locations in the city.

Go to:

Also, there is a barrel outside of Receiving at TLAC. Be sure and mark your donations for the hurricane victims. This disaster is overwhelming. Here is something we can do to help.

Call Liz White at 453-7737 if you have any Pet Food Bank questions.

Hello out there,

Does anybody know of a direct contact person in

Houston who is helping find temporary space for

animals displaced by the hurricane. We might have some available at the old shelter facility in Georgetown. Please contact me asap.
