CAVE DAY- September 17th
This Saturday, September 17th, the Texas Cave Conservancy will host the
FOURTH CAVE DAY. Throughout the state I hear cavers talking about the need for
public education concerning the importance of caves and the need to protect
them. Each year, we wonder if we will have enough Texas cavers to help educate
the hundreds of locals that come out for CAVE DAY. One way or the other, we
manage to put on a good event. We have had cavers from around the state assist.
Each year, these cavers ask. " Where are the local cavers ?" I do not have
good answers for them. I have talked to a few cavers about this and often they
reply that they are interested in caves only for the recreational and social
aspects of caving. They do not see the value of making more people aware of the
importance of caves.
You may know my first response to such attitudes, however, to be diplomatic
I point out that through such events we have been able to purchase the TCC
Headquarters along with three caves, assist the TCMA in their cave acquisition
efforts, and we currently have money in the bank to purchase " caves of social
and recreational value". We can use caver assistance this weekend. Some of our
valuable workers will not be available due to such excellent reasons as working
to make life bearable for the people of Louisiana here in Texas. We will make
this event come together one way or the other.
We need cavers to run the main table, cavers to demonstrate rope work,
cavers to assist non-cavers in and out of a small non-species cave, cavers to
lead surface tours, and cavers to show that they care about caves and cave
protection efforts. If you can make it, please call the TCC Headquarters at
512-249-2283 and leave a message so we will have an ideal of how many workers
we will have. You may come on out on Friday and stay through Sunday at the TCC
Headquarters. Bring your children if you wish but please leave dogs at home. I
would like to thank the Texas Aggies for their work this weekend. They have
shown their commitment to the protection of Texas caves on many occasions.
