Hot Science - Cool Talks "The Striking Behavior of Rattlesnakes" Dr. Travis J. LaDuc, Assistant Curator of Herpetology, Texas Memorial Museum Friday, November 18, 7:00 PM CST Reception and activities 5:45 pm, come early and see the exhibits! Welch Hall (WEL), Rm 2.224 http://www.esi.utexas.edu/outreach/ols/lectures/LaDuc/ LECTURE SUMMARY Rattlesnakes' capacity to injure or even kill humans has made them among the most misunderstood vertebrates on the planet. Popular culture feeds this fear with exaggerations of aggressive and deadly encounters, and this contributes to the persecution of this valuable group of animals. This lecture will dispel myths surrounding rattlesnakes by sharing insights gained through the use of high-speed videography, thermal imaging cameras, and radio transmitters. By offering suggestions on how to avoid encounters with rattlesnakes, coupled with an understanding of rattlesnake biology, it is hoped that rattlesnakes can be respected as an integral component of the natural landscape. WEBCAST: Can't make it? The lecture will be broadcast live over the Internet at 7:00 pm CST. Streaming audio of the presentation will be available as well as the PowerPoint presentation.
