Here is an idea for a better flashlight:
Some retail stores have a new LED flashlight by Coleman: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0009PUQL4.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg It has 5 small LEDs around a krypton bulb. You could pull out the krypton bulb and replace it with a luxeon type LED: http://www.theledlight.com/img-dcbulbs/lpr_3a.jpg Which cost around $ 27.00 This modification would give you a flashlight with a 4 choices of brightness: 1, 3 or 5 small LED's or the luxeon LED, for under $ 50.00. For some reason the headlamp industry is progressing much faster than the flashlight industry.
