New 336m pit in Mexico

Recently Charley Savvas, Peter Sprouse, Barbara Luke, Terri
Whitfield and I mapped a new 300m+ deep pit in the state of
Queteraro, Mexico. The pit, el Sotano de la Culebra, was found by
some young Mexico City cavers who called Peter to help them map it
who in turn gathered the rest of us to come along and help with the
survey. The first day at the pit Charley and I rigged the low side
with 14 rebelays and the next day the survey team headed down. The
high side goes libre with the free drop being 336m, now the 3rd
deepest pit in N. America (and something like 15th deepest in the
world). It is named el Sotano de la Culebra (snake) after the snake-
shaped entrance that is around 5m across and 15m long. Around 60-80m
down the pit the walls narrow to a very TAG-style well that is
perhaps 10m in diameter and fairly round. The map will be up at the
map salon at Convention for interested souls. Look for a full
article at your friendly neighborhood newstand soon...
