I have no idea which cave goes closest to the center of the earth, but
I suspect that David is correct and it would be an udersea cave or one
somewhere like the Dead Sea, or maybe Death Valley, if it has any caves.
Although most deep caves actually slope down under the surface, thus not
getting anywhere near as far below the surface as their depths might lead one
to think, there are deep caves which do go essentially straight down. For
example, Ocotempa in Mexico is over 1000 meters deep and the bottom is only 50
meters offset from the entrance horizontally. But such caves are still not
very close to the center of the earth, because all really deep cavesare located
at high elevations. If they weren't, they would be sumped out, and deep
exploration would hardly be possible. Another cave that might be in the
running is the Nacimiento del Rio Mante, which is low lying and was dived to
great depth by Sheck Exley. I believe it actually ended up below sea level as
fa!
r as Sheck got, and the cave was still going down. Such caves will never
really get very close to the center of the earth, though, in the grand scheme
of things. :-)
