28th Annual Cave Science Symposium, UK

The British Cave Research Association, Yorkshire Geological Society, and Leeds
Geological Association are pleased to announce details of the 28th Annual Cave
Science Symposium and associated field trips. The Symposium will be hosted by
Prof. Simon Bottrell and Dr. Phillip Murphy of the School of Earth and
Environment, University of Leeds, on Saturday 21st October, 2017. A programme
of presentations is being assembled that will be of interest to anyone wishing
to know more about the cave and karst environment.

Call for Abstracts

The response to the first call for abstracts has been very positive and it
already looks like we will have a fascinating collection of talks on our
special session, “Caves and Karst of the Yorkshire Dales”. Oral and poster
presentations on this special theme are still invited, as well as all cave and
karst topics from other regions.

Abstracts should be submitted by email no later than 31st August, 2017, to the
lecture secretary, Gina Moseley gina.moseley[-at-]uibk.ac.at. Please include
all authors with their affiliations, an email address for the primary author,
and an abstract of up to 500 words (main text and references only). If you are
intending to submit an abstract, Gina would appreciate you sending her an email
with a preliminary title. Don’t worry, there is no commitment, but it helps her
to compile a diverse and interesting programme.

Registration

Registration will take place on the day and a small admission charge will be
requested to cover refreshments, though entry will be free to speakers,
students, and members of the sponsoring organisations. Donations to help
finance the meeting will gladly be accepted.

To register your interest in joining or presenting at the meeting, please visit
the doodle poll (http://doodle.com/poll/r2s9cbfe8rzsye7a).

Venue

The address for the venue is School of Earth and Environment, Maths/Earth and
Environment Building, The University of Leeds, Leeds. LS2 9JT, United Kingdom.

Sinkhole Conference: Call for Abstracts Open Until 15 August

The Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and
Environmental Impacts of Karst, generally called “The Sinkhole Conference,” is
the longest-running international conference of its type. Since 1984,
engineers, geologists, hydrologists, land managers, biologists, and many others
have gathered at these meetings to exchange cutting-edge information on karst
and its many benefits and challenges. The call for abstracts is open for the
15th Sinkhole Conference. Abstracts may be submitted until 15 August 2017t.

The 15th Sinkhole Conference will occur on 2-6 April 2018 at the National
Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, USA, about a 1.5
hour drive from the Washington, DC area. The conference circular, which is a
convenient summary of the conference, is now available and downloadable from
http://www.sinkholeconference.com/, where all other conference details can also
be found. To submit your abstracts and for instructions on preparing them, see
http://www.sinkholeconference.com/abstract-and-paper-submissions-notification-content.

On behalf of the 15th Sinkhole Conference Organizing Committee, we look forward
to receiving your abstracts and seeing you in Shepherdstown next year!

National Cave and Karst Management Symposium, USA

The 2017 NCKMS will be held Oct. 16-20 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and that
there are rooms set aside at a couple of hotels (one is rumored to have ghosts)
in Eureka Springs for this event. It is important to go ahead and reserve a
room sooner rather than later to ensure those interested get rooms. The
Symposium price is a great deal and should fall under Federal per diem rates.

Reserve your room and also don't forget about the deadline of Sept. 10 for
submitting a paper or two.

http://www.nckms2017.com/

Look under Travel Info and then Locations to reserve a room for Symposium
prices.

present a module, please contact the organizers by the end of July so we can
get you on the program.

Minnesota, USA, Dye Tracing Website Now Available

The Minnesota DNR has been working in conjunction with the University of
Minnesota on a project to document and make available to the public dye trace
reports and articles about dye tracing and karst conduit flow in Minnesota. We
now have a significant amount of information available on the web. This
includes a means for making the reporting from all those years available using
a combination of the DNR website and the University Digital Conservancy. Each
link on the dye tracing webpage (linked below) leads either to a UDC page or a
link somewhere that already existed. The traces are organized first by county
and then by colloquial name of the study area. There is also a “related
information” section that contains links to other works or papers that are
generally related to dye tracing but do not contain information specific to any
trace that doesn’t exist elsewhere.

Grant Opportunity: Cave and Karst Conservation Assistance for the Fort
Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area, USA

Through a cooperative effort, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Roswell Field
Office and the Recipient will work together to maintain, improve, explore and
study Fort Stanton Cave resources within BLM New Mexico public lands, as well
as seek and use the skills, knowledge, and expertise in Recipient organization
to plan, develop, and implement cave management and conservation efforts with
BLM New Mexico. BLM benefited greatly from an existing Assistance Agreement
that helps BLM manage this world-class cave system.
