Thanks, Preston, for this. He’d love it, especially if it’s in an “overlooked”
and/or great muddy section.

Gary ODell tracked down that history just before WIlliam died and confirmed it
with William, because he is doing Rockcastle county history right now. He and
WIlliam’s brother Philip together have pieced together the Kentucky connection:
 1) their dad was a geologist (prof. at Texas A&M University) and did some work
in the area in summers, took the boys with him; and 2) Fort Campbell,
Kentucky, was where william was stationed in the army before he was sent to
germany — he started a cave club and when he was released he returned to the
area => yielding his early bulletin.

Gary’s book has a much cooler version . . . William approved.
thanks all

Bill Russell was one of the friendliest cavers in the world. He was also a good
writer as I remember reading one of his cave geology papers and was knocked
over.

In two weeks we are documenting two new caves in western KY we have been saving
for a couple of months. One has virgen cave 50 ft. from the entrance. We will
name a passage for Bill Russell in his memory. Not many know it but in Bill
Russell's early caving career he caved in eastern KY in the 24 mile plus Sloan
Valley Cave System. This was in the 1960's.

I cannot remember what pulled Bill to KY-Dr. Barr at UK? James Redell, being at
UK to study under Dr. Barr? The Army? Lou Simpson? Or, Sloan's was simply one
of the longest caves in the country at that time.

A Kirkwood story-one afternoon Bill Russell came over to the 1307 1/2 garage
where I was working. A lot of UTG caving rope was stored in the garage. Bill
pointed out that some of the rope was too close to a couple of old truck
batteries. I destroyed the ropes touching the batteries. Someone said I should
have saved them for vehicle towing, but I thought the risk of getting them
mixed up with caving rope was too much.

150-meter long, tight struggle with knife-like shredding blades of chert.
