Dear Pat and colleagues,

I only wish that it would be “odd to see a science reporter fail to provide any
type of current information.” I deal with lots of them as you know, and the
truly conscientious and knowledgeable breed that we used to have are quite rare
these days. There are some great ones who have a marvelous grasp of the
science but in many cases the next day, they are assigned to the latest
bleed-n-lead. So the science journalism specialization is imperiled.

I agree that being “effective” (whatever that exactly means in this context)
beyond one year, and not screwing up other aspects of the bat physiology or
inter-bat behavior, and tailoring for different bats in different habitats are
all essential considerations to make such a sketchy scheme work. Based on what
I know about Diana Northup’s work on the natural microbiome changes in bats
over very short periods of time, and her hypotheses that some bat types may be
faring better because of their natural endowment of bacteria that are known to
be anti-fungal producers, it seems that enhancing a bat species natural
microbiome would be more appropriate than spraying a “lab rat” species on them
like Pseudomonas fluorescens. The researchers ARE quoted as saying that they
found lots of P. fluorescens on the bats in the first place, but wonder how
common that is by species and geographically. I remain both skeptical, hopeful,
and sad all at the same time about the progress of the disease and our feeble
attempts to manage the situation. It does not bode well for how we deal with
the next pandemic in humans, although no doubt vastly more resources will be
flung at it, but will more wisdom be also judiciously employed?

I’ll try to be more cheerful next post….and Happy Apollo 50th Landing Week.
