It must be the same directory as what packaged TeX Live 2011 creates (not the same as non-packaged TL 2011 uses). But I fully agree that something starting with a dot is way more appropriate than ~/texmf-var. It only has to be the same for both ConTeXt and other TeX programs inside Fedora. Mojca PS: Imagine that you install both packaged and standalone TL 2011. You don't want the two to interfere.
