Hi, with XCode 4.6.3 in 10.7.5 and with XCode 5 in 10.9 I don't see this
problem  (though I don't recall right now whether I have that flag on in my
laptop...) . Neither do I experience it building with make... (?)

In any case, if one wants to fix the configure process, it has to be done
in configure.in, which is fed to autotools and automagically produces the
configure script. However, hardcoding paths is definitely not an option, so
I guess the proper thing to do is to add some warning that the user needs
to set a particular environment variable or something like that.
