I requested for the list of names only for the purpose of sending invitations to some of my friends and I wanted to ensure that they are not already members of the group. As my correspondence reveal I was not aware of the existence of the Yahoo group initially. Only after receving the clarifications received , I came to know the existence of the two groups. Further we know the email ids of most of the members who send mails on various subjects for the benefit of the Group members. So I dont think that there is any breach of privacy here. In the US / UK this act constitutes a breach of data privacy. Which means that as an individual, I have the right to keep my personal data ( such as email ids ) private. If I join a group, then the moderator has no right to give out the email ids to anyone without asking me. Unsolicited Commercial Messages ( aka Spam ) is also an illegal act. As the owner of the email id, I have a reasonable right to see that my time and attention is not diluted by undesirable messages. Giving out my email id to persons who have no reason to posses it, without my permission is not desirable.
