Eighty-two
year-old Brojogopal Layek has shocked doctors after he cut out his troublesome
pacemaker himself, and started carrying it around in a pouch hanging from his
neck.

Every day Layek washes it with neem
soap and Dettol to disinfect it. It is almost two months since Layek conducted
the surgery on himself and he proudly declares that there is no infection yet.

Layek, a resident of Barakar in Durgapore district of Bengal, has been using the
pacemaker since 1995. But the machine suddenly started developing snags since
2006, after ten years of use.

Layek, who was treated in Vellore since the start, underwent a second operation
in 2006 to shift the pacemaker
from the right side of his chest to the left, after the machine started
developing problems.

“Every now and then, we had
to travel to Vellore in Tamil Nadu for treatment. I was getting really annoyed,
so one night after
everyone went to sleep, I just took Lord Krishna’s name and a razor blade and
operated on myself,” Layek, a retired technician with DVC, said.

“I then applied iodine and bandages to the bleeding area, wrapped my chest with
my dhoti and went to sleep. The next morning, I was very pleased to find I was
still alive,” he added smiling.

However, when his sons Asish and Chandan learnt of their father’s antics, they
rushed him to a hospital in Durgapore.

The doctor too was shocked on seeing what Layek had done.

Dr Asish Thakur, who is treating Layek now, said, “I told Brojo’s family that
he should undergo surgery and place the under his skin, maybe near his stomach.
Otherwise he will catch infection. But he refuses to listen.”

When asked about the chances of survival, Kolkata - based cardiologist Dr R N
Bhaumikm said, “There is no threat to his life as the wire is attached to his
heart and the pacemaker is working.

But it was a gross mistake to operate on oneself. He could have caught a severe
infection. But that he has done the operation himself is unprecedented in
medical history.”
