The 23-year-old, who was told he'd never walk again and was confined to a wheelchair after a car accident five years ago, is standing up and moving around. With the aid of a pair of robot legs he has strapped on while in his chair, Mr Allen stands upright and controls his movements using a joystick and control pad. The device, dubbed "Rex", is the work of Richard Little and Robert Irving, who revealed their invention in Auckland on Thursday. The two childhood friends say they first drew what they call a robotic exoskeleton "on the back of a beer mat" seven years ago. That was after Mr Irving had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that may leave him confined to a wheelchair. "We went into the garage and started building a machine, and four years later we actually came out with something that looked like it could actually do something," Mr Little said. Almost $NZ10 million ($A8.19 million) has been spent on developing Rex into a 38kg device. Mr Allen, who still races motorbikes, said it took him about three days to master using Rex. "You go home after having a good go on (Rex), and all these possibilities of what you're going to be able to do again just keep coming back to you - so it's really emotional," Mr Allen said. So far, six New Zealanders are using Rex to gain extra mobility, with each device costing about $US150,000 ($A169,606.51). The inventors stress it's not to be used as a replacement for a wheelchair but in addition to one. The two engineers plan to develop Rex in to a lighter, more mobile machine. Rex is expected to be available internationally by next year, they said.
