*Lord Hanuman assumed this form to kill Mahiravana, a powerful
rakshasa<http://www.answers.com/topic/rakshasa>black-magician and
practitioner of the dark arts during the Ramayana war.
Mahiravana had taken Lord Rama and Lakshmana captive, and the only way to
kill him was to extinguish five lamps burning in different directions, all
at the same instant. Hanuman assumed His Panchamukha form and accomplished
the task, thus killing the rakshasa <http://www.answers.com/topic/rakshasa>,
and freeing Rama and Lakshmana.*

*The five faces of Panchamukha Hanuman are those of Sri Hayagriva, Sri
Narasimha, Sri Garuda, Sri Varaha and Hanuman Himself.*
*This form of Hanuman is very popular, and is also known as Panchamukha
Anjaneya and Panchamukhi Anjaneya. (Anjaneya, which means "son of Anjana",
is another name of Hanuman*).

*A 32 feet high Panchamukha Anjaneya idol is to be installed in the Sri
Viswaroopa Panchamukha Anjaneyaswami Asramam, at Periyakuppam, in
Thiruvallur, by the Viswaroopa Panchamukha Anjaneyaswami Foundation, headed
by S. VenkatesaBhattachar, ,at an estimated cost of about Rs.5 crores. *

* The Anjaneya idol is considered to be unique as the face with that of
Anjaneya, facing east, removes the sins of worshippers and confers purity of
mind (Chitha Suthi) on them. *

* The face of Karala Ugraveera Narasimha, facing south, removes fear of
enemies and bestows victory. The face of Mahaveera Garuda, facing west,
drives away evil spells and black magic influences and removes all poisonous
effects in one's body. Sri Lakshmi Varaha Murthy, facing north, wards off
trouble caused by bad influences of planets and ensures prosperity — Ashta
Aiswarya — on devotees. The Oordhva Mukha of Sri Hayagreeva, facing upwards,
gives knowledge, victory, a good spouse and progeny to worshippers. *

* Nagaraj Sthapathi and his team of 30 sculptors are involved in the
sculpting and the work Karnataka where the boulder was spotted *

* The Ashram site at Periyakuppam has been chosen after Divine approval. A
study of ancient scrolls showed that the site is legendary, as Anjaneya
while carrying the Sanjeevi Mountain, stopped here to witness the Siva Puja
being performed by Sage Agasthya. *

* The place was known as Rudravanam in times of yore and was the abode of
sages and Siddha Purushas. It is on the Chennai-Thiruthani-Tirupati route,
45 km from Chennai, very close to Sri Vaidhya Veeraraghavaswami Temple at
Thiruvallur, one of the 108 Vaishnavite holy places. *
