Dear Shri Srinivasan ji,

Nice of you to have sent the video clipping of Manna Dey's excellent
rendering, Poocho na kaise..., composed by S. D Burman..

You remember years ago Vividh Bharati had a special weekly Jaimala
programme for the Jawans presented by artists from the film industry. Once
it was Manna Dey's turn. In that he talked about this song.

S.D. Burman was a perfectionist (as Madan Mohan was, as per Lata
Mangeshkar). In those days there were no facilities for re-mixing and the
like as we have now. So every member of the orchestra team numbering 30, 40
or even more, had to perform in unison and to perfection. Thus, on several
occasions one song meant several re-takes. And Burman Da was a no-nonsense,
serious man. They all had great respect for him, and were literally afraid
to go near him. When the first-take of the song was completed, Burman Da
ordered everyone to pack up and go. A worried Manna Dey rushed to Burman
Da, and said, "Dada, if I have made any mistake, I shall try again and
rectify it. Please tell me where I went wrong. Please don't get annoyed, and
order us to pack up."

Burman Da replied, "Nahin, nahin. Mujhe is se badiya chahiye nahin." Yes,
this song was recorded in one go.

What an everlasting song and a befitting compliment to Manna Dey.

Regards

V.V. Sundaram
