India’s longest road tunnel, stretching all of 9 km is becoming closer to reality in Udhampur in Jammu & Kashmir. The Chenani-Nashri Tunnel construction work has started , according to a recent news report. Leighton Welston, an Australia-based firm began the project, according to a PTI news report."We have started the work today on this prestigious project. The twin tunnels which will come on Jammu-Srinagar national highway is one of the longest road tunnel in Asia and also in India," Managing Director of the company, Mr.Russell Waug has been quoted saying in the report. The twin tunnels will reduce the travel time between Srinagar and Jammu. The news report further added that the project is coming up at a cost of Rs.2,600 crore and would be completed in a period of next five years. **** -- With best wishes S Chander
