In his letter Shri G. Viswhanath clarifies to Shri Sivasubramanian the
reasons for his momentary infrequent contributions to the Thatha Patty
Group, and hastens to reassure Siva that ‘V.V. Sundaram’ will make up for
his posts. It is gratifying. Thanks GV.

That rekindles my childhood memories. Our neighbouring Kalpathy village
hosts an annual ten-day religious festival. Sengalipuram Anantharama
Dikshitar (discourse), Pittukuli Muruga Das (Bhajan) and Nurani Appu (also
Bhajan) are permanent fixtures. Other artists get invited by rotation.

Muruga Das was the star attraction. That year the programme was to start at
8 pm. Till 9 there was no sign of Muruga Dass. The crowd became restive. The
organizers went aside for a hush-hush talk, and one of them took the mike
and announced: “Periyorgale, Thaimargale … and, in a subdued tone, looking
at us in the front rows, *podi kuttigale *(half tickets). Muruga Das had to
give a performance in Coimbatore before coming over here, but somehow he has
still not been able to make it. He must be on his way. Meanwhile, Bhagta
janagale, please be seated, and enjoy the bhajan of Kalpathy Kovilkundu
Kunju Mani. About two-thirds of the crowd (mostly from neighbouring
villages) got up to go. That was an awkward situation the organizers just
could not put up with. So another Committee member, bestowed with tremendous
presence of mind, snatched the mike and made an impromptu announcement.
“Sorry we forgot to tell you that today’s prasadam is from Karimassery R…’s
house. I understand this year 6 varieties have been lined up, all made of
pure ghee. Also we might close the function a little early.” That was
enough. The crowd retreated to occupy vantage seats.

So GV ji, you have to provide for ’incentive’ for members stay tuned to my
pieces.
