I think, You have mixed up the two issues of Ramayana and Mahabharata .
Ramayana era prceeded Mahabharata era. Dussera festival started from
Mahabharata era is misnomer.

1. Pandavas hidden their weapons ( ayudh ) in vani tree during their
one year exile . They retrived their weapon from vani tree on dasami day.
As customary in those days they did puja to the weapons on vani tree before
getting them back . hence the ayudha puja in north india began on vijay
dasami day.

2. In south indian states ayudha puja is celebrated on Navami day i.e
day of saraswati puja . Their celebration is based on victory of
chamundeshwari devi on demons.

3. Lord Rama got victory over King Ravana on Vijaya Dasaami day. They
rested their weapon after doing puja to them and celeberated the victory as
dussera day.

It so happened that both the events in Mahabharata and Ramayana on dasami
day.

I hope my interpretation of vijaya dasami is adept.
