Assembly election results: BJP wins Raj, MP and C'garh, leads in Delhi; AAP
scripts history; Cong routed

Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, it also snatched away power from the Congress
party in Delhi and Rajasthan.

The verdict of the Assembly elections in four states – Delhi, Madhya
Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh – has sparked a wave of fresh
enthusiasm in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) camp, which has already been
riding high after the declaration of Narendra Modi as its Prime Ministerial
candidate.

Not only did the party retain its governments in Madhya Pradesh and
Chhattisgarh, it also snatched away power from the Congress party in Delhi
and Rajasthan. While it swept Rajasthan, winning 162 seats, the BJP managed
to emerge as the the single largest party in Delhi with 32 seats, three
short of the half-way mark.

However, despite the good performance by the national party, the show was
stolen by the debutant – Aam Aadmi Party. The party, formed by Arvind
Kejriwal less than a year ago, performed spectacularly well by winning in
as many as 28 seats. AAP's performance was particularly amazing as the
party did not follow the traditional political means during its campaign
and fielded faces alien to the Indian polity.

Both the Congress and the BJP could not refrain from taking a strong note
of the performance of the Aam Aadmi Party, which has now decided to go
national. While leaders from across the rank and file of the BJP
congratulated AAP for its good show, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi
went on to say that both the national parties needed to take lessons from
Arvind Kejriwal's party.

The result in Delhi came as a big shock for Sheila Dikshit-led Congress
party, which has been in power for 15 years as it was decimated by the BJP
and AAP. The Congress managed to secure win in merely eight seats and
adding insult to injury Sheila Dikshit lost to Kejriwal by a massive 22,000
votes in the New Delhi constituency.

For a party seen as an upstart born out of the ashes of Anna Hazare's Jan
Lokpal movement, the Aam Aadmi Party of Arvind Kejriwal made a spectacular
electoral debut Sunday, winning 28 seats in the Delhi Assembly polls and
emerging as the second largest party ahead of the ruling Congress, and
barely behind the BJP.

Rivals and analysts were left groping for adjectives to describe the
performance of the political novice, but they agreed that the rise of AAP
reflected aspirations of urban voters, the strength of an anti-corruption
platform and the impact a strong third player could have on elections.

The AAP's stunning debut was capped by Kejriwal's thumping victory against
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in her New Delhi constituency by a margin of
25,864 votes.

But the results also meant Delhi was headed for a hung assembly with
Kejriwal firmly rejecting any alliance with the Congress or BJP.

And with the BJP emerging as the single largest party with 32 seats - four
short of a majority - Kejriwal's decision may mean another election in
Delhi.

"We will play the role of a constructive opposition and will not seek or
give support from any party to form the govt," Kejriwal told reporters in
his first comments after results were declared. "This is a historic
election result in many respects. This is not a victory of the Aam Aadmi
Party, but a victory of the people. Politicians now know that the public
will now remove them if they resort to such means."

While the BJP's CM candidate Harsh Vardhan congratulated Kejriwal and the
AAP, he said that his party had emerged as the single largest party but did
not have the mandate to form the government.

"We respect the people's mandate and we will not indulge in breaking or
supporting other parties or candidates to form the government," Vardhan
said.
