How mad they are can be gauged from a massive concrete cricket bat installed in the city. The cricket bat monument shows the love of the common citizen for the game of cricket. the bat and its construction has a checkered history. The India team under Ajit Wadekar toured the West Indies in 1971 and followed up with a tour of England in 1972. In both the tours abroad, the Indian team beat both the West Indies and England on their home grounds 1-0. It was a great victory and at that time India had never won a series against such formidable opponents. West Indies were led by the legendary Gary Sobers and the English team by the wily old fox Ray Illingworth. As a tribute this massive concrete structure with the name of the players of the team engraved on it was erected. It became the pride of Indore, but later when India lost some miscreants went and defaced the bat. It was restored later and just shows how volatile peoples affections are.
