Once in the court of Ayodhya an argument took place among the scholars. Eminent
sages like Narada, Vashishtha and Vishwamitra were also present in the court.
The topic of the argument was, what is stronger, Ram or Ram Nam (His name)?
Devarshi Narada said with sureness that it was Ram Nam (Ram’s name) that was
stronger and he could prove his statement too.

The same day, when the court was about to disperse, Devarshi Narada, went up to
Hanuman, who had been observing the debate silently. He told Hanuman to pay his
greetings to all the sages except Rajrishi Vishwamitra, since he was not just a
sage but also a king. Hanuman respected Narad’s command. He greeted all the
other sages except Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra was too cool to mind it. But Narad
went up to Vishwamitra and made him believe that Hanuman disrespected him
purposefully and he must hit back. Upon hearing this, Vishwamitra got enraged
so much so that, He even went up to Ram and asked him to issue a death sentence
for Hanuman, for not respecting Him. Ram was muddled, he revered his Guru but
he adored his most favorite disciple Hanuman too. But he bowed down to his
Guru’s tantrums and ordered that Hanuman be killed the very next day. He said
that he will shoot the arrows himself to kill Hanuman. Hanuman got scared and
went to Narad and elucidated the situation. Narad asked him to stay calm, take
a dip in the river and stand on its banks chanting the Ram Nam.

The next day, Hanuman followed Narada’s words and stood on the banks of the
river and started chanting Ram-Nam. Ram came and looked at Hanuman helplessly.
Hanuman kept chanting “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram”, unceasingly. Ram shot an
arrow, it circled around Hanuman and fell near his feet. He tried another one,
same thing happened. Ram kept shooting arrows but none of them could harm
Hanuman. They would reach near Hanuman and fall down at His feet. Ram got
exhausted.

In the meantime, Narada went to Vishwamitra asked him to stop the fight. He
confessed that it was all started by him and that it was his way of proving
that the Ram Nam was stronger than Ramhimself.
