*15 (a) THE MARCH TO THE MOUNT MERU.* *Ugravarman followed the Soma Vaara Vratham taught by Agasthya maharishi sincerely. He was blessed with a worthy son whom he named as Veera Paandiyan.*
*His son was as brave as he was intelligent. He learned Vedas, Puranas and Saasthras. He mastered the weapons of warfare as well as the war techniques.* *There was a drought one more time. People were starving due to famine.The king consulted the astrologers. Their predictions were bad indeed! One year of food scarcity was foreseen!* *The King Ugravarman was feeling miserable and helpless. He prayed to Lord Siva to show him a way out. God appeared in his dream that night and said,* *“Do not lose hope and courage! I have a good news to share with you.There is a cave near the proud Mount Meru which is filled with gold and other valuables.* *March to Mount Meru with your army. Conquer the proud Meru by hitting it with the bouquet given by your father.It will then reveal the secrets about the buried treasure.* *You may take as much as you want. Seal the cave again for keeping the treasure safe for your future use.”* *The king was thrilled by the revelation in his dream. He was filled with fresh hopes of success.* *He left with a huge army and marched northwards. The dust raised by their march made visibility impossible. The Fish in the flag of Paandiya king was fluttering high in the air. The whole army was excited about finding a solution to the famine and drought.* *15.(b) THE CONQUEST OF MOUNT MERU..* *The army marched through many countries, crossed many rivers, passed through many forests and scaled many mountains in its path.The army finally reached the holy city Kasi, on the banks of river Ganges.* *Everyone took a holy dip in the Ganges.They had a dharshan of Visalakshi Devi and Lord Viswanaathan.The army then kept on marching till it reached the Mount Meru.* *The King Ugravarman praised the mount Meru in many sweet words but it would not budge! It remained silent just like a real mountain of rocks!* *The King remembered the words spoken by his father as well as by Lord Siva in his dream. He hit the Mount Meru with the bouquet given by his father long ago!* *The Mount Meru lost its pride and arrogance and appeared before the king in a human form. It had four heads and eight arms and looked magnificent.* *It demanded the king as to what was his wish.The king wanted to know about the buried treasure. The Mont Meru told him,* *“The treasure is buried under the shade of the mango tree over there. You may open the cave and take out as much treasure as you want. But do seal the cave again before you go back.”* *The king was pleased to find the huge treasure. He took out as much as he thought he would need to meet the crisis in his country. He sealed the cave with his own emblem and returned to Madhuraapuri.* *He bought enough food stuff to feed his citizens till better days returned.The rains came back in due time. The crops grew well and the prosperity returned to the kingdom once again.* *Veera Paandiyan was ready to take over as the new king. Ugravarman crowned him as his successor.
