17.(a). THE CROP AND THE WEEDS. The ancient kings married queens to bear them princes fit to rule the country, but they also had many other women to satisfy their lust. These women always had their eyes on the King’s gifts and riches.They cared little about the king or his kingdom.
King Veerapaandian had many such women. They also bore him several wicked sons-shaped after their own selves. The lawfully wedded queen did not have any offspring.The King and Queen observed several virathams and finally, a son was born to them. They became very happy, little knowing what the future had in store for them! The king went hunting and got killed by a ferocious tiger. This was the opportunity the wicked women and their sons were waiting for. Using their influence they stole the royal elephants, horses, gold, silver, diamonds and even the king’s crown and scepter. After performing the last rites to the dead king, the ministers wanted to crown the young prince as his successor.When they visited the royal treasury, they were in for the severe shock! The treasury had been looted! They wanted to make a new crown for the prince but they had no diamonds.Without a crown, there could not be a king.Without a king, there could not be a government. Without a Government, they would become vulnerable to the enemy’s attack. They decided to seek the blessing of Lord Siva in solving this problem.They saw a diamond merchant standing outside the temple. He held a bundle of beautiful gems and was extremely handsome to look at! He asked the ministers as to what was bothering their minds! The ministers told him their tale of woe.
