18. SUBSIDING THE SWOLLEN SEA WATER. Abisheka Pandian never forgot Lord Siva even for a moment. He did special abhisheka to the Lord on every Chitra Pournami day, with the fragrant water in which pure camphor was dissolved. He would stay up till very late on those nights.
Indra also used to come down to earth to do puja to the Sivalingam. Indra’s puja got delayed since he had to wait till the king left the temple. Indra was not happy with this state of affairs. Varuna asked Indra what was bothering him. Indra told about the King’s puja and how it delayed his own puja. “Why should you do puja to the same Lingam as he does? You may worship another Lingam. There are so many Lingams on the earth.” Indra replied to Varuna,”There may be many Lingams on earth. But only that Chokkalingam was able to free me from the Brahma Hathi dosham and liberate Airavatham from the curse of Durvasa Rishi. Chokklingam is the best of all the Lingams.” Varuna told Indra,”I am suffering from the heaviness of the stomach. Can Chokkalingam cure me of the pain and suffering?” Indra replied,”Nothing is impossible for Sivalingam. You may test Him and convince yourself.” Varuna ordered the sea to swell up and destroy Madhuraapuri. The sea rose very high, uprooted many trees and carried them along with its giant waves. The King Abisheka Pandian sought the protection of Lord Siva. Siva gave him abhayam and ordered the four clouds residing on his matted coils, along with the crescent moon, “Go forth and drink up all the swollen waters of the sea!” The clouds left with a loud noise and drank up the water from the swollen sea till the sea became shallow and calm. Madhuraapuri was saved. The king and his citizens thanked Lord Siva .
