*அனுயாத்திரம் செய்தேனோ அணிலங்களைப் போலே*
இராவணனால் கடத்தப்பட்டு, இலங்கையில் சிறையில் வாடும் சீதாதேவியை மீட்டு
வர, இலங்கைக்கு
கற்கள் கொண்டு குரங்குகள் பாலம் அமைக்க, வாடிய முகத்துடன் அமர்ந்திருக்கும்
ஸ்ரீ இராமனைக் கண்ட அணில்கள், இராமனுக்கு உதவி புரிய முன் வந்தன.
கடலில் குதித்த அணில்கள், நனைந்த உடலுடன் கடற்கரையில் உருண்டன. உடலில் ஒட்டிய
சிறு மணலுடன் ஓடிய அணில்கள், பாலத்திற்கு சென்று, குரங்குகள் அடுக்கிய
பாறைகளின் இடுக்கில் அம்மணல் துகள்கள் விழுமாறு உடலை உலுக்கினர்.
அணில்களின் இச்செயலைக் கிண்டல் செய்த குரங்குகளிடம், ஒரு அணில் – “உங்களைப்
போல் பெரிய உடலும் வலிமையும் என்னிடம் இல்லை. அதனால் என்னால் இயன்றதை நான்
செய்கிறேன். இதற்காக நாங்கள் இக்கடலே வற்றிப்போகும் அளவிற்கு கடலில் குதிக்க
வேண்டும் என்றாலும், நாங்கள் அதையும் செய்யத் தயாராகவும் உறுதியாகவும்
உள்ளோம். “இராமா” என்னும் ஒரு சொல் எங்களுக்கு அந்த வலிமையை தரும்.”, என்றது.
அணிலின் இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்ட ஸ்ரீராமர், மனம் நெகிழ்ந்து, அணிலைத் தன்
கையில் ஏந்தி, “ எதையும் எதிர் பார்க்காமல், உதவி புரிய வந்துள்ளீர்! உனது
கூட்டத்தாரின் பெரும் உதவிக்கு மிக்க நன்றி. உன் செயலாலும், வார்த்தைகளாலும்
என் மனம் மகிழ்ந்துள்ளது.”-என்றார். அணில்களின் இச் செயலினைப் பாராட்டி அவர்
அதன் முதுகில் பரிவுடன் தடவ, அவரின் மூன்று விரல் அணில்களின் முதுகில் கோடு
போட்டன. இதனாலேயே அன்று முதல் அணில்கள் முதுகில் கோடு உள்ளது.
அணில்களின் இச்செயலை, தொண்டரடிப்பொடியாழ்வார், தன் பாசுரத்தில் :
குரங்குகள் மலையை நூக்கக் குளித்துத் தாம்
புரண்டிட்டு ஓடித்
தரங்க நீர் அடைக்கல் உற்ற சலம் இலா அணிலும் போலேன்;
மரங்கள் போல் வலிய நெஞ்சு வஞ்சனேன், நெஞ்சு தன்னால்
அரங்கனார்க்கு ஆட் செய்யாதே அளியத்தேன்
அயர்க்கின்றேனே.
-என்றார்.
குரங்குகள் மலையைத் தள்ளிப் பாலம் அமைக்க, அணில்கள், கடலில் புரண்டு, கடலை
வறண்டு போகச் செய்ய எண்ணியும், மணலைக் கொண்டு பாலம் உறுதியாக இருக்க உதவியும்
செய்து ஸ்ரீ இராமனுக்குத் தங்களால் இயன்ற வழியில் உதவி புரிந்தன. எந்த ஒரு
பலனையும் எதிர் பார்க்காமல், தனது சிறு உடலினைக் கொண்டு, தன்னால் இயன்ற
வழியில் உதவி புரிகின்றன! நானோ இங்கு மரத்தைப் போல் வலிய நெஞ்சினைக் கொண்டு
இறைவனுக்கு எவ்வுதவியும் புரியாமல், எதிர் பார்த்து மட்டுமே நின்று
கொண்டிருக்கின்றேனே!
திருக்கோளூர் அம்மாள், "அணில்களைப் போல், குரங்கின் பின் சென்று, ஸ்ரீ
ராமனுக்கு பக்தியுடன் சேவை புரிந்தேனோ?", என்று வினவுகிறார்.

In the great Indian epic, Ramayan, after Sita was abducted by Ravana, Lord
Rama and Lakshmana assembled the army of monkeys with the help of King
Sugriva. In order to cross the ocean, they decided to build a bridge and on
the command of Sri Rama, the monkeys started working immediately, without
wasting any time, and started collecting stone and boulders from the
mountains. Thousands and thousands of monkeys started working day and
night, to collect, cut and assemble the rocks and make sure the bridge is
ready as early as possible. Even Lord Rama was amazed and pleased at the
way the monkeys are working and helping him.
One day, while he was watching the work going on, he noticed squirrels
doing something unusual. Noticing the squirrels, he went close to them and
tried to see what they were trying to do. When he was nearing the
squirrels, he heard the conversation between a monkey and a squirrel.
A monkey that was carrying a heavy stone on his back was about to step on a
squirrel that came in his path and realizing it, before stepping on it, the
monkey jumped back by dropping the stone. Apologizing for the act, the
squirrel replied – “Please look always before placing your steps for we are
small and busy running to help Lord Rama!”
Amazed at the squirrel’s words, the monkeys started laughing. Without any
response to the laughs of the monkey, the squirrel said – “Look, I’m not
big enough to carry rocks and boulders like you all. But we do want to
help. God gave me only a little strength. I can only carry pebbles. So,
while few of us are carrying pebbles, the rest of us, we jump into the
ocean and make our bodies wet; come back to the beach and roll in the sand.
Then we go to the boulders and shake the sand from our bodies in the gaps
between the rocks you place. Even it means we have to drain the ocean by
making our bodies wet and help build the bridge stand strong for the army
to cross over, get Sita safe and return safely, we are ready to even do
that with the little body and strength we have. Crying out aloud “Rama”,
will give us all the strength we need to even drain this ocean with our
tiny little body.”
Listening to the words of the squirrel, Lord Rama was impressed and he came
close to them. Holding the squirrel in his hand safely, Lord Rama said to
the monkeys – “Oh, I really admire your help. But, do not make fun of the
weak and the small. Your strength or what you do is not important. What
matters are your love and a heart without expecting anything in return for
the help you do. This little squirrel has love in his heart. These tiny
pebbles and stones and sand that are brought by these little squirrels are
the ones that are filling the gaps between the huge boulders and rocks you
add to the bridge and they are binding the bridge to stand strong!
Turning to the squirrel, Lord Rama said softly, “My dear squirrel, I
apologize on behalf of my army, and thank you for your timely help. Please
go and continue your work happily.” Saying this, he gently stroked the back
of the squirrel with his fingers, and three lines appeared where the Lord’s
fingers had touched it.
Thondaradippodi Azhwar celebrated their service by the squirrels to the
Lord in his Thirumaalai pasuram:

*tharanga nIradaikkaluRRa salamilA aNilum pOlEn*
*marangaL poL valiya nenjam vanjanEn nenju thannAl*
*aranganArkkAtcheyyAdhE aLiyaththEn ayarkkinREnE*
“The squirrels thought “when the Lord is very anxious to retrieve Sita
Piratti, these monkeys are blocking the ocean very slowly. Moreover, they
do not have the strength to block the ocean. It is clear that they do not
have sufficient manpower to fill the gaps between the mountains with sand.
Only because of this, they are not carrying sand to fill the gap between
the mountains”. In order to overcome this deficit, the squirrels entered
the waters to wet their bodies, without expecting any benefit out of their
work. Look at me… I’m standing here without any involvement, with my mind
hard like a tree. Instead of doing service to the Lord, I stand here making
myself not useful and even making the lord wonder whether my heart is stone
or liquid!”
Thirukkolur Ammal is asking "Did I do divine service to the Lord like the
squirrels?"
