57 (a) SIVA CURSES UMA.

Once Siva did upadesam to Uma about the sacred and secret meanings of the
Vedas. For some reason Uma was not paying proper attention to Siva.

He got annoyed and cursed her thus:
“You did not pay proper attention or give due respect to the sacred Vedas.
May you be born among the fishermen who have no vrathams or dharma to
follow. After all your sins are absolved, you may return to me”

Uma broke down and cried,
” Lord! you know very well that I can not live away from you. Why do you
punish me and curse me thus?”

“I will marry you and end the saapam at the right time!” Siva consoled her.

Vinayaka and Skanda became very angry on learning about these happenings.

Vinayaka gathered all the manuscripts of Veda and threw them down into the
sea-even before Siva could stop him.

Skanda grabbed the remaining manuscripts and threw them down into the sea.

Siva got very angry on Nandhi who had allowed these troublesome children in.

He cursed Nandhi thus:
“You have disobeyed me and my orders to keep out everyone. May you be born
a giant shark in the ocean.”

Any curse inflicted on Vinayaka would affect Siva himself. So he did not
curse Vinayaka. Skanda was cursed to be born as the dumb son of a merchant
Dhanapathi.

The curses took effect immediately. Nandhi was now transformed into giant
shark in the ocean. Uma became a beautiful baby girl. Skanda was born as
Rudra Sarman on earth!

We must always pay full attention to our guru while learning. It was wrong
on the part of Uma not to pay proper attention and it was wrong on the part
of Skanda to throw away the sacred manuscripts into the sea.

(B). KING OF THE FISHERMEN.

In the eastern side of the Paandiya kingdom the fishermen lived in a
Paakkam.

A good man was born as a fisherman due to a sin he had committed in his
previous birth. He became the leader of those people.

He could not remember his past life. But his bhakti towards Siva remained
undiminished.
He did not have any children of his own but treated all his people as his
own children.

When he was on his way to the sea shore he heard he feeble cry of child. He
was stunned to find a lovely baby girl under the palm trees. He wondered
who it could be and took it home to his wife.

They believed that it was a gift from God. The whole village celebrated the
arrival of this divine baby-the gods gift to them. The danced, they sang and
thanked their god for the gift of the lovely child.

The child grew up well. She did new things and played new games everyday
making the whole village happy.

Nandhi who had become a huge shark now, hunted for the manuscripts of the
Vedas. He found them and carried them on his head.

Often he would become angry at the thought of being separated from his Lord
Siva. He would churn the ocean and topple all the boats and create a havoc.

The fishermen tried to catch the shark. But it would always elude them and
hide in the depths of the ocean.

Uma had attained marriageable age now. Her foster father decided that he
would cast two mangoes with one stone.

The man who captured the troublesome shark would win the hands of his
daughter in marriage.

Siva thought that the time was ripe for the sapa vimochanam. He would
return Nandhi to his original glory and marry Parvathi.
